Survivor: Deadly avalanche a ‘horror story’

Powder Magazine senior editor John Stifter, who witnessed the slide
that killed three of his skiing companions Sunday, said one person
survived by bear-hugging a tree and holding on as the snow barreled
over him. Another skier who was caught in the slide was saved when
she deployed an air bag designed to keep her afloat.

Its an absolute horror story, Stifter said Monday.

The chances of surviving an avalanche once it has you in its grips
are slim, experts say.

The snow doesnt really care how experienced you are. Its not
keeping track of experience level, said Mark Moore, an avalanche
meteorologist and director of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche
Center, which warned of extreme avalanche danger Tuesday. Once
youre in an avalanche, it has you at its mercy.

Stifter identified the victims as Jim Jack, a well-known head judge
for the Freeskiing World Tour; Stevens Pass marketing director
Chris Rudolph; and Johnny Brenan, a Leavenworth
contractor.

The Freeskiing World Tour and Utahs Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort
had scheduled a gathering at the resort Monday afternoon to
remember Jack, whom Stifter described as generous, smart and
influential in the ski industry.

The skiers were equipped with safety devices and kept track of each
other as they strayed beyond the boundaries of the popular Stevens
Pass Ski resort, about 90 miles northeast of Seattle. But the
precautions still didnt save some from getting trapped,
highlighting the risks of backcountry activity during a season of
heightened avalanche dangers in the West.

Sundays avalanche was relatively large, Moore said. The Northwest
Weather and Avalanche Center rate Sundays avalanche danger as
considerable to high. Heavy snow had fallen in the Cascades on
Saturday with widespread avalanches and strong winds, all red
flags, Moore said.

Most of our avalanches here are storm-related, so we get most of
our avalanche activity during or immediately after a storm, Moore
said. Its very sad to have accidents like this happen. No matter
how good the snow is, you still have to be objective about risk,
he added.

Statistics show that 93 percent of avalanche victims can be
recovered alive if dug out within 15 minutes, but survival rates
drop quickly as time passes, according to the Utah Avalanche
Center. After 45 minutes, only 20 to 30 percent of victims are
alive. After two hours, few survive. People die because their
carbon dioxide builds up in the snow around their mouth and they
quickly die from carbon dioxide poisoning.

The Tunnel Creek canyon — where a snowboarder died in an avalanche
last year — is outside the boundaries of Stevens Pass ski resort,
but the area can be accessed by taking one of the resorts lifts to
the top and hiking a short distance. The area is not controlled for
avalanches.

Stifter said he and Jack skied in the resort until about 11:15 am
Sunday when they met up with Rudolph. Stifter was in Washington
state on an assignment, but this was just a fun run with
friends.

He said he read the avalanche report that morning and knew
avalanche dangers were considerable. He and others talked about it
and determined they could ski it safely, he said. Jack and Rudolph
had both skied the area countless times, he said.

Three of the 15 in the initial group peeled off and went a
different way. Twelve others headed down, pairing up and skiing one
by one, leapfrogging each other.

Each carried shovels and avalanche probes and wore avalanche
beacons, a standard rescue device that allows rescuers to locate
the signal of a victim if buried.

Stifter watched as Jack made three turns, and then he saw a pocket
of snow pop out. Holy smokes! This is huge, Stifter recalled,
when they realized how huge the avalanche was.

We immediately pulled out our transceivers, designated a leader
and spaced out 30 feet, zig-zagging all the way down, hoping to
pick up their friends signals, Stifter said.

Eventually, they picked up on the first signal and began digging
furiously. They found Rudolph face down. Stifter performed CPR for
about 30 minutes to no avail. Another group worked on digging out
Brenan and Jack.

Professional skier Elyse Saugstad told NBCs Today show shes
convinced the air bag she deployed immediately — which she carried
in a backpack and deployed with a lever by her chest — saved her
life.

Its lifting you kind of up above the avalanche, Saugstad said
Monday. Its not like youre taking an inner tube ride down some
snowy field. … It feels like youre in a washing
machine.

Only Saugstad had an air bag, Stifter said. Air bags range from
about $600 to $1,000. They have been widely used in Europe with
reports of high survival rates, but they have become popular in the
US only recently.

An avalanche beacon, shovel and probe are among the mandatory
rescue items for those heading into the backcountry, but experts
say its best to avoid avalanches entirely.

The truth is, if you have to use your beacon, it means youve made
a big mistake, said Benj Wadsworth, executive director of the
Friends of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center, a nonprofit
that works with the center to promote avalanche education and
safety. The focus of avalanche education is to keep you out of
avalanches in the first place.

Adds Moore: There are all of these technological things that will
help us, but theyre not a talisman that you can wave at the
snowpack. You cant wave your beacon or your air bag at the
snowpack. Its not going to make you safe. Its going to help you
when get in trouble.

Michael Regentz: Playing phone-stacking game teaches dinner etiquette

When you are out to dinner with friends or family, have you had the urge to take out your cell phone and place it next to you at the table? Have you noticed that many of your friends also take out their phones and lay them on the table? I have heard many people complain that their friends are half-listening to the dinner conversation because they cannot disconnect from their cell phones.

Going out to dinner with friends used to be pleasant. As you look around the restaurant, do you notice that many diners are talking on their phones while their dinner companions are staring off into space being totally ignored?

What can we do?

I have uncovered a practical solution on the Internet from a blogger who goes by the name Lil-b on Tumblr. His name is actually Brian Perez and Perez has created a game called the Phone Stack. The game is quickly taking over as a new dining trend.

Phone Stacking Rules:

When everybody arrives and sits down to eat, each person places his or her phone facedown or stacks it on a pile in the middle of the table.

You will inevitably hear phone notifications going off. Texts, calls, Tweets, Facebook and email notifications. But youre not allowed to check your device.

Youll spend all dinner almost-reaching for your phone. Whats holding you back from picking up your machine and checking it?

The first person to look at his or her phone has to pay the whole bill.

We just seem to not be able to help ourselves. Today, when it comes to dining out, or doing anything in general, our cell phones are important to us. When it comes to sitting around any meal, we pay equal amounts of attention to our smart phones than we do to our table company.

Our eyes are constantly darting between our glowing screens and the people around us. But could Phone Stacking be our temporary, fleeting savior?

If the bill comes before any phones are checked, everyone wins and pays for his own meal. One food blogger calls it one of the coolest pieces of socially engineered live gaming Ive ever heard of. The response has been overwhelming on Tumblr. More than 60,000 Tumblr blogs have shared the game, and almost every person who does thinks the idea is brilliant.

As one person says, Will I suffer? Of course! But I think my friends will be hurting just as bad. So will you take the phone-stacking challenge? How do you think itll affect your ability to connect with your friends?

NADA Foundation to Support Wounded Veterans at Convention

MCLEAN, Va., Jan. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ –The National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation is helping raise awareness of a special canine companions program that provides wounded military veterans with trained assistance dogs.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120104/DC30041LOGO )

NADA Foundation Chairman Bob Mallon will present the Wounded Veterans Initiative of Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) with a $10,000 donation at the NADA Convention and Expo in Las Vegas on Saturday, Feb. 4.

This is part of our long-term commitment to Canine Companions, Mallon said.

Bren Denney, a US Navy veteran who received his service dog Stefano more than two years ago, along with Bob Bunger, CCIs national director of development services, will receive the donation. The funds help pay the training costs of a service dog that will be placed with a veteran later this year.

Theres so much more to the relationship between the dogs and the impaired, said Denney, who was injured in April 2008 while on duty in Singapore. I did not realize it right away, but the emotional joy these animals provide far outweigh any physical task they could ever do.

Since 2002, the NADA Foundations Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund has contributed $140,000 to Canine Companions, placing 14 companion dogs with physically disabled children and military veterans. McCarthy served as NADA president for more than 30 years.

Stefano carries my books for me. He seems to like it. He meets me at the front door every morning, added Denney, a resident of Alpine, Calif., who is currently attending college. They are the sweetest, most loving companions a person could wish for and they always create a smile.

The NADA convention runs Feb. 3 to 6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. For more information about the convention, visit www.nadaconventionandexpo.org.

Editors note: Mallon will present CCI with a $10,000 donation at the NADA Foundation exhibit (Booth No. 2052) at 10:30 am on Saturday, Feb. 4.

About the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation

The NADA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NADA established in 1975, is a non-profit organization that supports a wide variety of charities and causes, including the Wounded Veterans Initiative of Canine Companions for Independence and natural disaster relief for dealership employees. The NADA Foundation also provides grants to colleges and universities, including scholarships to the families of 9/11 victims.

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nations capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international. For more information, visit www.nada.org.

Dons ready to tackle town’s top amateurs

HEAD coach Tony Miller has warned his side not to expect an easy ride when they meet a Doncaster Select squad in their final pre-season friendly.

The Dons head to Wheatley Hills rugby club on Sunday to take on a squad featuring players from Bentley Good Companions, Moorends Thorne Marauders and Doncaster Toll Bar.

And Miller is demanding a professional approach against the amateurs.

He said: “We’ve got to make sure we earn the right to play football and we just don’t think we can do what we want.

“We know we’re set for a repeat of the game last year and they’ll be at us for the first 20 or 30 minutes.

“It’s about doing things the right way and not taking anything for granted.

“We’ve got to be professional about this.”

The Dons’ ranks were depleted for the friendly clash with Sheffield Eagles on Sunday and Miller was forced to work with just 15 players for the majority.

Grant Edwards suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up while Andy Townend broke his hand just 15 minutes in.

The two sides were level at 22-22 with 15 minutes to go after tries for the Dons from Mike Emmett, Stewart Sanderson, Lee Waterman and Nathan Powley but the Eagles surged on to win 40-22.

Miller said: “We played with 15 men for the majority of the game and I thought at the end that took its toll on us.

“They came with a 22 man squad and we had 17 men at first because we’ve got six out injured so it makes a difference.

“I can’t fault the effort the players put in and I thought the final score was not a reflection on the game.

“We did a lot of good stuff but a bit of dumb stuff as well.

“There’s a lot more pleasing aspects than disappointments.”

Miller confirmed that big name signing Paul Cooke is still working on his fitness.

He said: “I think in two or three weeks Paul won’t be far off.

“I doubt he’ll play any part this weekend but then we’ve got a week off so he might be ready for the Gateshead game.”

Doncaster Select: Chris Hemmings, Paul Purnell, Lyndon Stayley, Nick Tesh, Dougy Reed (all Bentley); Tom Holt, Tom Brandham, Gaz Carey (all Toll Bar); Dean Armstrong, Danny Hornsby, Shaun Roberts, Mark Roach, Shaun Carver, Wayne Green, Alex Palmer, Steve Allen, Ian Evans, Kev Lake (all Moorends).

Do You Remember… Some Of The More Surprising Of Doctor Who’s Companions?

As Karen Gillan collects her well-deserved National Television Award for playing the role of Amy Pond, Dr Who’s companion, in the latest series of the Tardis-traveller’s adventures, we take a look back through the archives to remember some of the more surprising members of the elite club to have accompanied the Timelord on his never-ending mission to keep the planet safe, and cause some mischief along the way… How many of these do you remember?

The First Doctor – William Hartnell:

Carole Ann Ford
She played the Doctors very first Companion, Susan Foreman, and made 11 appearances in all during the first two seasons of the show, and also appeared in a 1983 20th-anniversary special.
Small fact: The first Doctor’s first Companion was also his grand-daughter, because programme makers decided that a teenage girl accompanying an old man across the universe might seem otherwise unseemly.
Her last name of Foreman was reportedly an alias taken from the owner of the junkyard, near where she and her grandfather Doctor lived in the TARDIS during their time in London in 1963.

Peter Purves
He played Steven Taylor and made 10 appearances with the Doctor in total in the 1960s, before making his name as a Blue Peter veteran and stalwart of school education and corporate training videos (where he even turned up in The Office)

Jean Marsh
This fine-boned actress played Sara Kingdom in one appearance only. She later became a household name as the creator and star of Upstairs Downstairs.

The Second Doctor – Patrick Troughton:

Frazer Hines
Hines played Jamie Crimmon for 21 episodes, although another actor had to step in for two episodes, when Hines was struck down by chickenpox.
Hines later found bigger fame as a resident heartthrob of Emmerdale (when it was a Farm).

The Fourth Doctor – Tom Baker:

Louise Jameson
She became the thinking, time-travelling man’s crumpet with her sensual portrayal of Leela in nine episodes in the late 1970s.
Bizarrely, writer Chris Boucher named her after the Palestinian hijacker Leila Khaled.
Jameson later rocked up in Emmerdale, Tenko, as Jims love interest in Bergerac and in EastEnders as Rosa DeMarco.

The Sixth and Seventh Doctors – Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy:

Bonnie Langford
Despite only making six appearances in all, child star Langford made her presence felt as Melanie Bush, crossover companion to two different Doctors. She first appeared as part of the Doctor’s future, and it was never established how he actually met his curly-haired companion. Langford has always been famous, both before and since, most recently as a pantomime regular.

The Ninth Doctor – Christopher Eccleston

Billie Piper
Another child entertainer, Piper made her first acting mark as the Doctor’s companion Rose Tyler, one of the leading characters of Russell T Davies’ high octane series reboot in 2005. Even the grim-faced Eccleston couldnt fail to be charmed by his working class shop assistant Companion, and Rose broke well-established TARDIS taboos by actually falling for him, although they were destined to go their separate ways after two series.

And in special fond place, standing apart from the rest…

Elisabeth Sladen
Gets her own category as Sarah Jane Smith, appeared in 19 episodes in all, as Companion to the Third and Fourth Doctors (John Pertwee and Tom Baker), but was given her own strong storyline that captured fans imagination. She was the keeper of K-9, and later her own spin-off series that introduced her to the next generation of views.
Sladen enjoyed a renaissance after returning, at Davies invitation to accompany the Tenth Doctor, but died in April last year.

And the rest… Catherine Tate, David Morrissey, Kylie Minogue, Lindsey Duncan, Bernard Cribbins(?)… you definitely remember even if, in comparison with the Doctor, you have to take more conventional routes to rediscover them.

Whos been your favourite of the Doctors companions? And how does Amy Pond compare? Let us have your thoughts below…

Companion piece for Bonynge completes rare double

THEY are a rare breed, Companions of the Order of Australia. Having more than one in the family is an event even rarer.

But today, the conductor Richard Bonynge, 81, caught up to his late wife, Dame Joan Sutherland, becoming the second member of the Bonynge/Sutherland household to be awarded the countrys highest honour.

Only three other power couples have achieved this feat: former Wallabies captain and Sydney lord mayor Sir Nicholas Shehadie and his wife, the NSW Governor, Professor Marie Bashir, and the business and philanthropic duos of Gordon and Marilyn Darling and Richard Pratt and Jeanne Pratt, although the now deceased Mr Pratt relinquished his award after a $36 million price-fixing scandal.

Im very proud, very honoured, its a wonderful thing, said Bonynge, recognised for his service to the performing arts. Ive shared my life and music with my wife and now Im sharing the AC with her. Im especially happy that its a recognition for music, and music has always been very important in Australia.

Dame Joan was made a companion in 1975, as an inaugural recipient of the honour established that year. By then the couple had already been married 21 years and had forged an international reputation in the operatic world as a formidable team, she on the stage, he on the podium. It was largely through Bonynges coaching and scholarly research that the bel canto repertoire, represented by works from Italian composers such as Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti, was revived. Last year he established the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Opera Foundation, which each year chooses a young Australian or New Zealand singer to help them further the art of bel canto.

Bonynge has recorded more than 50 complete operas and numerous ballets, and although advancing years and the illness and subsequent death of his wife in October 2010 has forced the maestro to slow down a little, he is yet to retire from the podium.

Over the past two years he has conducted a new production of Bellinis La Sonnambula for Opera Australia and three Donizetti operas in London and Athens. In September, Bonynge, who lives in Les Avants, Switzerland, will return to Sydney to conduct a concert version of Handels Rodelinda at Angel Place, featuring the Australian-born soprano Valda Wilson, who sang at Dame Joans memorial service at Westminister Abbey.

Ive had a wonderful life – I really didnt expect to have this career, he said.

Who’s Day Roundup: The Ballad Of River

Lets begin with something lovely. Say hello to singer-songwriter Ally Rhodes, who has written a beautiful song titled River Song, which is actually about River Song (as opposed to being a song about a river).

She writes that the song is about the triumph of love over predetermined destiny. The lyrics contain lines like You and I breathe constellations/And twist them in our lungs to stay alive/Youve lain in silence on the ground/But from the dirt and tears, you learned to rise.

We think it combines the mysticism of Stevie Nicks with the voice of Christine McVie. Your experience may vary:

Naturally, a quick-working fan has already set Rhodess song to clips from the show, and this is also something to be applauded:

Heres what else is going on this week:

o While were waiting for the next series of Doctor Who to get started, who wants to play a game? Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock is set to be released on PS3 and PS Vita in March, with a PC version coming shortly after, and as you can see from this trailer, it pits the Doctor and River Song against some of his most despicable foes.

o A few weeks back, we pointed to some clips from the David Tennant-narrated Earthflight, the BBCs latest look at life in the wild. Well, heres more of Tennants musical Scottish burr at work, as brightly colored macaws soar over the Amazonian jungle:

o In another treat from the BBC Classic Doctor Who YouTube channel, Clive Doig explains what it meant to be a vision mixer in the early days of the series.

o What does Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy want for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who? Here he is interviewed alongside Sophie Aldred (Ace), who says that Russell T Davies had plans for her to appear on The Sarah Jane Adventures.

o YouTube user SaphireRain42 has re-made the Doctor Who instrumental piece The Mad Man with a Box from Season 5 using 70 tracks, 65 of them violins. You know, the word EPIC is so overused that its now nearly meaningless, but, this time, the term has rarely been so fitting.

o And while were on musical matters, heres that Radiophon-A-Tron again. Its the ancient flash game made by the classic Doctor Who website in the early 2000s, which features all the sounds from the old theme tunes.

o This weeks companions are action man Steven Taylor and bullish teen Vicki (she appears to have had no surname) who traveled with the First Doctor, and were the first replacements for the classic early traveling team of the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara. Read all about them.

o Fans of classic Who will probably be very familiar with the story of Shada, a Douglas Adams-script for the Fourth Doctor which never finished filming thanks to a strike among BBC technicians. Some of the footage ended up being used in The Five Doctors, but the script languished in the vaults for years until it was resurrected for a series of special animated webcasts (which are here, narrated by Paul McGann and Lalla Ward). And now its been novelized too. Is novelized a verb? Lets say it is for now. We can argue about it later.

National list identifies our finest companions

A High Court judge, the former head of the federal public service, a conductor and the governors of Victoria and Western Australia have received the nations top honour.

Justice Virginia Bell, Terry Moran, Richard Bonynge, Alex Chernov and Malcolm McCusker were appointed Companions of the Order of Australia yesterday in the 2012 Australia Day honours list.

They are among 439 recipients to be recognised this year for their diverse contributions and service to their fellow citizens and internationally.

Mr Bonynge, an acclaimed conductor and musical scholar, said he was practically speechless upon hearing he was in the list.

His mind turned to his late wife, Dame Joan Sutherland, who previously received Australias highest civilian honour.

Australia has long been in the forefront of the musical world and I feel that this honour is as much for music as for me, he said from Switzerland.

Mr Moran was equally humble in sharing the credit for his award.

For me its important because its recognition of the work of public servants, he said.

He spent nearly four decades in bureaucracies around Australia, retiring in 2011 as the head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Justice Bell was recognised for her long legal career and particularly her social justice work as an advocate for the economically and socially disadvantaged.

She cut her legal teeth at the then newly established Redfern Legal Centre in the 1970s and 80s.

Mr Chernov has been the Governor of Victoria since April 2011 – a big step for the immigrant boy who arrived from Lithuania as a youngster.

He pursued a career in law and played a significant role in legal education in Australia and the region, becoming chancellor of the University of Melbourne from 2009 to 2011.

Mr McCusker, the West Australian Governor, also had a long legal career, including four years as the independent parliamentary inspector for the Corruption and Crime Commission.

He has been an advocate for sustainable development and education and given significant philanthropic support to a range of medical research, youth and arts organisations.

Overall, 301 men and 139 women received honours today.

Governor-General Quentin Bryce, the Order of Australia chancellor, said the honours elevated the concept of giving. They heighten our respect for one another and they encourage Australians to think about the responsibilities of citizenship in our democracy, she said.

There were 22 people appointed as Officers and 118 as Members in the Order of Australia. Another 294 people were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.
