Amazon Kindle Fire ‘bigger news than Greece’

The manager of the pound;198m Finsbury Growth amp; Income trust said the biggest news in the second half of last year was Amazons launch of the new Kindle Fire personal reading device.

Last year, Mr Train initiated a position in brewer Heineken, saying it was a finer business than Fosters.

It appeared to us that we could buy Heineken for half the price that SAB Miller has put on Fosters, he said.

He added that it was clear that brands remained valuable, particularly those that have global reach, and those that have made a move into emerging markets are extraordinary value.

The bullish stance had also led the manager to borrow against the trust so that in spite of grim old markets the portfolio was geared at currently 7 per cent of the trusts net asset value.

As of January 17, the trust was trading at a share price of 334.8p, a 1.1 per cent premium to its net asset value a share.

today announced that Cal Credit Card company has deployed its “Safe Shopping” system using CA Arcot TransFort(TM) for Issuers.

CA Arcot TransFort is an access control server (ACS) that provides 3-D secure authentication and fraud prevention services for card processors and issues. The service is delivered as a cloud-based offering and provides multiple layers of protection and identity verification during cardholder-not-present shopping transactions.

The new Safe Shopping system at Cal Credit Card serves 1.7 million customers and enables Cal Credit Card to implement the 3-D Secure program quickly to reduce the risk of fraud in card-not-present transactions.

“We implemented the Safe Shopping project in order to increase our customers’ confidence in making purchases online. CA Technologies solutions allow us to verify the cardholder’s identity in real-time, while preserving an excellent user experience,” commented Elad Saar, project manager, Cal Credit Card Company.

In order to take advantage of the new service, Cal Credit Card customers must sign up to use the service on Cal Credit Card’s website, or during their first web purchase with Cal Credit Card. Tech companies see gold in online payment handling

A glint of gold in Indonesia’s e-commerce has spelled out opportunity for technoprenuers, beyond the usual throng of online retailers dispersed throughout online shops, forums and social networking sites.

Sensing the lack of a sound payment gateway to ease online shopping transactions, a growing group of tech heads are developing services that will enable people to send and receive payments online.

Indonesia’s largest online community forum, KasKus, introduced KasPay in 2009 in response to members dabbling in selling products including the latest smartphones.

KasPay works as an electronic wallet, or e-wallet. People must link their KasPay account to their bank account. They can then top up this e-wallet via bank transfer with funds between Rp 50,000 to Rp 5,000,000 — the maximum stipulated by a Bank Indonesia regulation on electronic money.

Andrew Darwis, KasKus co-founder, pointed out that so far, 100,000 people have signed up for a KasPay account, with 30 percent of those accounts actively topping up.

“Most KasPay users belong to the KasKus community,” he said.

Andrew added that KasPay was the chosen payment system for purchases, such as mobile phone vouchers (e-Pulsa), on other partner websites including disdus.com, Indonesia’s version of Groupon.

“E-pulsa is our method of acquiring and educating users on using KasPay,” he said, given the familiarity of the public with electronic vouchers. “That’s why we don’t take profits from e-pulsa.”

For many payment gateways, their services mimic those offered by US-based PayPal.

However, given the lack of credit card ownership amongst Indonesians and the need to adhere to local regulations, e-wallet top ups via bank debits have become the product of choice.

Rieke Ustadiyanto, one of the founders of the Bali-based payment gateway iPayMu, pointed out that payment gateways made transactions more secure and controlled.

For one, buyers did not have to expose their account information to merchants because their payment gateway would act as an intermediate to all payments, Rieke noted.

Besides e-wallet or debit card services, iPayMu also offers escrow and money services to their approximately 3,000 account holders mostly made up of small and medium enterprises.

Through the escrow system, iPayMu would channel payments deposited by buyers to merchants only after the purchaser has confirmed that the ordered goods have arrived.

He added that the money transfer service allowed users to deposit and withdraw money from any of the 87 banks, in addition to state postal agency PT Pos Indonesia, who have partnered with iPayMu.

“It was really hard to get the banks,” Rieke said with regard to convincing the banks to link up to iPayMu.

“They welcomed the idea but needed to verify our system,” he said, adding that they planned to expand their services to credit cards by April.

One point of hesitation for companies in offering credit card payments is the legal complexity in offering such services, not to mention the heightened risk of fraud. Thus, banks are also cautious in allowing payment gateways to access the credit card system.

However, on a slightly different business model, payment gateway company Doku, offered services in 2007 to enterprises needing a system to enable online payments.

“We cooperated with banks that had already obtained licenses from Visa and MasterCard,” Himelda Renuat, Doku chief marketing officer, said.

She added that they had around 250 clients on their list, ranging from telecommunications companies in need of e-wallet systems to smaller businesses such as car rentals.

She further said that processing credit cards meant handling bigger payments, given that state carrier Garuda used their services for online ticket purchases, but removed the risk of managing floating funds.

Like other payment gateway providers, Doku was aware of the risk of credit card fraud.

“That is why we have set up parameters within our system that score transactions as genuine or suspicious,” she said, adding that they worked with banks in detecting blacklisted card numbers.

She further said that clients were also consulted on ways to deflect fraud, such as advising hotels to request guests to show credit cards upon checking in.

“We provide abundant information on the basics of ‘know your customer’ procedures,” she said,
claiming that these measures have made the number of fraud cases negligible.

There are certain issues hampering the growth of these companies though. Many insiders have pointed out that the regulation on e-payments left many aspects vague.

“The regulation legally defines e-money as cards, chips or electronic gadgets used as payment tools, whereas iPayMu does not fit into any because it is a non-bank institution for payment finalization,” Rieke said.

Wiku Baskoro, a blogger at DailySocial, added that Indonesian shoppers had not become more amenable to paying online due to trust issues.

None of the payment companies have achieved a ubiquitous presence around e-commerce sites, which would have been more convenient for e-shoppers, he added.

“Banks are the ones who should take charge or there should be one non-bank institution that manages these payments,” he said. “Banks would also offer a greater sense of security.”

Bank Central Asia recently launched KlikPay, an online payment system for their debit and credit card holders.

However, payment systems remain lucrative business. Doku charges fees to clients depending on the size and complexity of the client’s business.

Rieke added that their users top up an average of Rp 100,000 in the e-wallets, which iPayMu pooled in their corporate bank account.

“You can calculate yourself the size of our floating fund from those 3000 merchants,” he said.

Two men busted while using a dead man’s credit card

Hawks spokesman McIntosh Polela explained that a businessman was killed in Botswana on January 5.

His body was discovered two days later.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the dead mans credit card was being used in a shopping spree in South Africa.

Botswana police referred the matter to their SA counterparts. Police, working with one of the countrys banks, kept watch of the shopping transactions, which included household appliances and a car tyre.

The first suspect, a Zambian national, was arrested in Johannesburg South, when he went to fit a tyre, which he had ordered.

Registration numbers of the car the second suspect was using was circulated. Metro Police pulled the car over at a roadblock in Midrand and notified investigators.

The Nigerian national was arrested, and led police to his rented flat. Here, police found the purchased items, a scheming device as well as many bank cards.

The suspects will appear in court on Friday (today) facing charges of fraud.

It is also expected that the Botswana authorities will ask for the extradition of the two men, Polela said.

Canada trying plastic money

OTTAWA, Nov. 14 (UPI) — Plastic isnt just for credit cards any longer, at least in Canada, which on Monday abandoned paper for its $100 bills.

The decision was made to go with a plastic polymer to give the C-notes a longer life and make it harder for counterfeiters to copy, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The new bills have two transparent windows incorporated into them, making them hard to forge but easy to verify. One of the windows has holographic images and the other is in the shape of a maple leaf.

The plastic money also has transparent text, raised ink, partially hidden numbers and a metallic portrait, the CBC said.

The $100 bill, which is expected to last 2 1/2 times as long as the paper version, features a portrait of former Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden and also honors Canadas medical innovations.

Canada is to roll out a plastic $50 bill in March, followed by $20, $10 and $5 bills by the end of 2013.

Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney said Canadians want to use cash for transactions but need currency that guards against fraud, The Globe and Mail reported.

Reports of the death of cash are greatly exaggerated, the Toronto newspaper quoted Carney as saying. Our research shows that cash is used for more than half of all shopping transactions.

Canadians, as a consequence, need a currency that they can trust.

OUR OPINION: Plan better for our busiest road

While City planners meticulously set parameters for development in various parts of Peterborough, one of the most important and visible areas is left to grow wild. Were talking about the Parkway — the gateway to our city.

When Costco was making plans to come to town, we lamented the addition of yet another set of traffic lights along a stretch of pavement that was not designed as the arterial road it has become. As we predicted, the store has become a magnet for other retailers which will add even more cars and congestion.

At this point, the City is trying to sort out how the addition of Lowes hardware store will fit into the mix. If there had been any forethought at all, this would have been set out in a secondary plan years ago. Instead, businesses arrive with their wish lists and the City tries to accommodate them in the interests of building a stronger tax base and creating more jobs.

Apparently these retailers arent interested in the five retail nodes already identified in the Official Plan. They want to be near Costco and the draw to that area will only increase as more shopping transactions are made there.

Already, traffic gets backed up on Lansdowne Street as drivers steer their way to The Parkway. That congestion will only get worse if not handled properly.

The City has invested heavily into improving The Parkway interchange at Hwy. 115 but if more lights and store entrances are built just north of there, the arrival into Peterborough will be a slow and frustrating one.

Is this really how we want to greet people when they get here? Remember the value of a first impression.

It costs taxpayers a great deal of money to go back and rebuild roads and intersections to meet demands. Doing it right the first time is not only practical, it is more fiscally responsible.

Without a plan, how do you avoid creating another bottleneck down the street?

To top it off, the City has agreed to sell half the property it had set aside for a GO station, which could be shared with the Shining Waters Railway. What had been a forward-thinking purchase has now been sacrificed for shortterm gain of building a corporate hardware store. Just look at the crammed parking lots at the Oshawa and Whitby GO stations. If only they had the land we apparently think is surplus.

Whats done is done.

However, we beseech City officials to look further down the road when planning what happens around The Parkway. Otherwise, people stuck in crawling traffic will spend lots of time just getting into this city.

Will they want to come back? We would sure have to up our game to convince them its worth the drive.

This representative study revealed that 7 out of 10 Austrians are convinced that the future development of society will strongly depend on the Internet. The Austrian population in general considers the web as a central instrument for the promotion of democracy and advocates more widespread availability of public data over the Internet. Viennese citizens in particular call for simplified public administration procedures based on state-of-the-art communications technologies.

?Our society is marked by the widespread use of state-of-the-art communications technologies. Without them numerous social and political developments would be unthinkable. The Telekom Austria Group is actively supporting an open society, where each single individual has unlimited freedom to promote and develop his/her personal aspirations. According to the survey, the majority (56%) of Austrians and 77% of those who used Facebook favor the role of the Internet as a political platform. One in 3 Austrians is willing to publicly discuss issues of general interest such as large-scale construction projects over the Internet. 58% of the survey participants view the possibility of freely expressing their opinions online as a major personal advantage. Among the Viennese population, 75% are enthusiastic about this opportunity. On the contrary, e-voting is still a very controversial issue: 4 out of 10 are willing to use electronic voting, 4 out of 10 would never. Such a reluctant attitude is considerably stronger in rural areas than in urban centers.

The survey also showed that the majority of Austrians advocate free access to the population register (51%) and to the commercial register (53%), with male citizens showing a stronger willingness compared to their female counterparts. 57% would even favor making their personal data available over the Internet if this meant that they were able to carry out public administration procedures online. In the under-50 age group almost two thirds of the survey participants advocate e-government solutions and, among the Viennese population, those willing to use electronic public administration channels reach an impressive 70%. Furthermore, 96% of the survey participants call for a comprehensive disclosure of public information, especially traffic data and police information about car crash hotspots (87%).

Another compelling survey result revealed that 48% of Austrians think that the salaries of top managers should be publicly disclosed on the Internet. However, they do not want to apply the same transparency to their own financial matters: 86% of the survey participants are against the publication of their tax declarations.

The same reluctance is showed with regard to online shopping transactions. Only one third is willing to use their credit cards for online payments and 88% consider data abuse on the Internet as a major drawback of the digital age. On the contrary, the use of the Internet as a whistleblower platform to uncover scandals like Wikileaks meets with general approval. According to 70% of Austrians, the Internet fulfills a control function for those in power and 65% of them think this is okay.

In the aftermath of the revolutions that led to a change of power in Egypt and in other countries of the Middle East, 80% of Austrians have realized that the Internet has the power to mobilize people and trigger revolutions. However, they are skeptical about the use of the Internet as a political instrument, considering the terrible consequences currently faced by these countries in the post-revolution phase. In Austria, the political situation is stable and the Internet is mainly viewed as a communication instrument to express a political opinion. More than two thirds of the Austrian population are convinced that the Internet promotes democracy. This view is shared by 78% of Facebook users and by 85% of the survey participants between 16 and 29 years of age.

Furthermore, the great majority of Austrians are against comprehensive government intervention with regard to the Internet. In the Facebook community 72 versus 5 vehemently oppose such interference by the ?Big Brother?. Nevertheless, when child pornography or Internet criminality are at stake, the attitude changes radically. 93% call for a more rigid state control to eradicate child pornography and 81% to combat online criminality. All in all, the Internet is viewed by 73% of the survey participants as a tool in the hands of the people. Only 16% think it is a power instrument of the ruling class.

Finally, the survey revealed that 70% of Austrians believe that the future development of society will strongly depend on the Internet: 89% of the survey participants and 90% of Facebook users are convinced that the future of the Internet will be largely determined by trend-setting Internet media giants such as Google and Facebook. According to two thirds of the Facebook community, people ?like you and me? will play a crucial role in co-shaping the Internet of tomorrow, whereas no power at all is attributed to big firms, governments and especially political parties.

New tax card available from Monday

A key purpose of the card is to help shoppers keep track of their purchases for their income tax returns without hoarding receipts

As of Monday, consumers will be able to obtain from banks a special tax card that can be used to electronically record shopping transactions and keep a running total of expenses.

A key purpose of the card, according to Finance Ministry officials, is to help shoppers keep track of their purchases for their income tax returns without hoarding bags full of receipts.

The card has the appearance of a credit card but will not bear any personal details. White and emblazoned with the words ?receipts card,? it will also feature a 10-digit code which links to the holder?s tax registration number (AFM).

Shoppers who want to record the value of their shopping transactions should present the card to the retailer as they pay. The retailer will swipe the card through the point of sale (POS) machine used for credit cards transactions and the information will then be passed onto the bank that has provided the machine. At the end of each month, the lender will send the information to the Finance Ministry.

According to Finance Ministry sources, taxpayers will be able to check what amounts they have passed through the cards on the Internet via the Taxisnet site.

Finance Ministry officials believe that the card will help boost state revenues, mainly from value-added tax, making it harder for business owners to conceal sales figures.
